Why is Thanksgiving Celebrated on November 28?

Thanksgiving Day has its roots in the early European settlers in North America and Native Americans, as a time to express gratitude for the harvest and the year’s blessings. The most famous historical celebration took place in 1621, when the Pilgrims in Plymouth shared a meal with the Wampanoag Native Americans, giving thanks for a successful harvest.

Thanksgiving, as we know it today, became a national holiday thanks to President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, in the midst of the Civil War. Lincoln proclaimed it a day of unity and gratitude, to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November.

However, in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday to the third Thursday of November to extend the Christmas shopping season and boost the economy. This change sparked controversy, and in 1941, the U.S. Congress officially set Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, which is the date we observe today.

Therefore, Thanksgiving is celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday of November, and November 28 is one of the dates it has fallen on in past years. It’s a day to gather with family, enjoy a traditional meal with turkey, and give thanks for the blessings received throughout the year.
